Security Fences

Throughout history one of the main roles of a fence has been security.  Although today’s fences are also decorative, the oldest fences in the world’s main purpose were to keep undesired people out of a certain area.  The Great Wall of China and , were built to protect the people within the fence.  Actually the word fence in the Middle Ages referred to the act of self-defending.   If you hope that your privacy fence will also provide you and your family with some security you are not alone; security is the most common reason homeowners build a fence.  In Salt Lake City there are many options to build a secure fence that will protect your family.

Different fence materials will provide different amounts of security.  Wood fences can be quite secure as long as they are solid and do not have any easy climbing routes.  Metal fences also provide excellent security.  The most common metal fence material today is aluminum.  Metal fences are a great option because they provide exceptional security but they don’t block beautiful views.  Worldwide chain link fencing is very popular for security purposes.  For residential security 2 inch to 2 3/8 inch mesh works well.  The smaller holes in the chain link fencing the higher security it will provide.  Vinyl fencing can also provide great residential security.

Besides considering which materials to use for your security fence, you should also consider the different features that may make your fence more secure.  Consider the height of your fence.  A standard 4-foot fence is tall enough to impede would-be fence jumpers, but to make it more secure you may want to think about a 5 or 6 foot fence to increase the protection of your property.  Make sure the gate is sturdy.  Gates are often the weakest part of a fence.  To increase the security of your fence you should select strong, jimmy-proof locks and tough hinges.  Spiked fence tops can also deter intruders.  Also, check that the bottom of your fence is close enough to the ground to prevent anyone from crawling underneath.

Finally you should think about your fence and look at it through an intruder’s eyes. You may want to think about how your fence will protect anyone who does gain access to your property.  In some cases a fence may protect the burglar once they are inside it’s boundaries.  It’s pretty easy to spend lots of money to improve the protection ability of your fence. But in most instances a tall sturdy fence in Salt Lake City will provide the protection you and your family need.
