Fence Repair

Vinyl fences are a great investment. they are easy to clean and maintain. But occasionally, just like other fence materials, vinyl can need repairing.

Some repairs, like filing in a hole, may be something you can do on your own. To fix a small hole in the vinly, you would need:

• towels for cleaning
• water
• expanding insulation foam
• plastic body filer
• medium and fine grit sandpaper
• a hand saw
• spray paint

After wiping the area down with a clean towel, you’d need to sand the area around it with the medium grit sandpaper, in about a 2″ perimeter.

Depending on the size of the hole, you would fill the hole with the expanding insulation foam. If the hole is larger than 1 1/2″ in diameter, you would need to use the foam. To use the foam, you would slowly spray the foam into the hole, allowing the foam to expand and attach to the inside of the fence. You would stop filling the hole when a little foam is coming out of the hole. Then you would have to wait over night for the foam to dry. Then you would need to take a saw and cut away the excess foam outside of the hole. Then you would use the medium grit sandpaper to make a small indent in the fence. Making the foam flush with the fence doesn’t work because the filler needs space to go in so the filler will be flush.

Then you would have to take the time to wipe away the dust and debris around the hole again. Then you would fill in the hole with the plastic body filler. The filler would need to dry for an hour. Then you would have to sand the body filler with the medium and then the fine grit sandpaper to make sure the filler is flush with the fence. After all the sanding, you would need to wipe off the surfaces again, and then you would need to find paint to match the fence and then paint over the plastic body filler.

If the hole is smaller than 1 1/2″ then you can skip putting in the insulation, and just use the plastic filler.

Fixing a small hole in a vinyl fence can take several hours over two days to fix. If a panel or section of the fence is broken, the whole section or panel will need to be replaced. This can be a multiple-person job, and requires knowledge of several hand tools and could require digging up the posts and resetting them.
